Exchanging a Foreign Driving License for an Austrian Driving License

Due to popular demand, we have compiled the process and documents required based on our experiences with the Verkehrsamt (Traffic Department).

NOTE: This guide is specifically for exchanging a foreign driving license and not for applying for a new license.

Can I Use My Indian License in Austria?

International driving licenses are valid for one year but must be accompanied by a national driving license. You need to obtain a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local RTO in India before entering Austria.

You can drive or rent a car for one year from your date of entry into Austria. However, it is advisable to exchange your Indian driving license for an Austrian one, as extending the IDP is not allowed.

NOTE: Without a valid IDP, it is illegal to drive in Austria using an Indian driving license.

What is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

An IDP is issued to applicants holding a valid Indian license who are residents of India. The application must be made in Form 4A or in writing to the RTO within the applicant’s jurisdiction, specifying the countries to be visited and the duration of stay.

How Can I Exchange My Indian Driving License for an Austrian License?

Documents Required

  1. Original birth certificate
  2. Original Meldezettel and 3 copies
  3. Original passport and 3 copies
  4. Original driving license and 3 copies
  5. Original Residence Permit [RWR(+)] and 3 copies
  6. One EU-compliant photo
  7. German translation of the driving license and 3 copies
  8. Medical certificate
  9. Application form for an exchange and confirmation of driving school (Fahrschule) registration
  10. Practical test confirmation form

ÖAMTC Document for Exchanging Driving License

German Translation of Driving License (Duration: 30-60 mins)

  1. Visit the ÖAMTC head office (Schubertring 1-3, 1010 Wien) or any local branch with your original driving license.
  2. No appointment is necessary.
  3. Translation fees: €27.40 without membership; with a basic membership (€19.90), translation is free. Consider if the membership is worth it based on your plans (e.g., if you’re buying a car).

Medical Certificate (Duration: 30-60 mins)

  1. Obtain a medical certificate for the driving license from an authorized doctor (not covered under the e-card).
  2. The cost is approximately €35.
  3. Specify that you need a medical certificate for the driving license when booking your appointment.
  4. The doctor must not be your family doctor or one you've visited in the last three months. List of authorized doctors.

Application Form for Exchange and Driving School Registration (Duration: 30-60 mins)

  1. Find a nearby Fahrschule (driving school).
  2. Inquire about English-speaking instructors if you do not know German.
  3. If you plan to drive multiple vehicle types (car, motorcycle, camper van), select accordingly on the application form.
  4. Register for practical tests for foreign driving licenses (cost: €99 to €199 depending on the school).

Now you are ready with the required documents to visit the Verkehrsamt (Traffic Department office).

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Book an Appointment:
    • Go to Sicherheits- und verkehrspolizeiliche Angelegenheiten.
    • You can book an online appointment or visit directly. (Address: Dietrichgasse 27, 1030 Wien).
  2. Online Appointment:
    • Prefer online booking as spot appointments depend on availability.
    • Visit this link to book.
  3. Visit on Time:
    • Arrive with all required documents and a printout of the appointment confirmation (if online).
    • Fill out the form provided in the waiting room.
  4. Submit Documents:
    • Go to Zimmer 1 before your turn, keeping all documents sorted and ready.
    • If everything is in order, you will receive immediate confirmation, and they will retain your original driving license.
  5. Missing Documents:
    • If any documents are missing, you will be asked to provide them. You can return with the letter provided without needing a new appointment.
  6. Approval Process:
    • The approval process may take about 2-6 months or even longer. Your license undergoes verification with the Indian government.
  7. Driving Class:
    • Once approved, you will attend driving classes, which usually involve a minimum of 2 sessions (~€60-70 each).
  8. Book the Practical Test:
    • The test is typically held every Thursday from 7 AM to 1 PM.
  9. Pass the Exam:
    • If you pass, congratulations! You will receive a VORLÄUFIGER FÜHRERSCHEIN (Provisional License).
    • If you fail, continue with additional sessions until you are ready to retake the exam.
  10. Finalize Payment:
    • Pay the amount mentioned on the cost sheet (around €120.50).
  11. Receive Your License:
    • Wait for the physical card to be delivered to your address (official timeline is 1 week, but it can take up to 1 month).
  12. Verify Details:
    • Once received, verify all details on the license.

    I have seen that for a person who has been or has resident right in Austria for more than 6 months IDP is invalid after 6 months. Is that true or not?

      Best of my knowledge The validity of IDP is one year from the date of its issue or the validity of the domestic license whichever is earlier.

    Also it is not necessary to have IDP normal Indian license will also work till first 6 months of stay
